The Fort San Felipe, which was built in the 16th century and served as a prison under Rafael Trujillo's dictatorship, lies close to the port of Puerta Plata. La Isabela, a settlement built by Christopher Columbus, is located near Puerto Plata.
Puerto Plata is known as “La Novia del Atlántico”. It is the biggest and most important city on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic. It is one of the most important touristic points of the country.
Located between its colonial port and the impressive Isabel de Torres Mountains, Puerto Plata has the only aerial tramway in the Caribbean, making it possible to ride up to Pico Isabel de Torres, a 793 meter high mountain within the city. You will find a botanical garden and a replica of Christ the Redeemer, the famous statue in Rio de Janeiro, at the top of the mountain.
Similar to the capital, Santo Domingo, Puerto Plata has a boardwalk more than 6 kms of length along the seafront. In one extreme you will see the San Felipe Fort. Built to defend the island from possible invasions, is now an interesting museum that exhibits historical objects used in the independence battles, as well as photographs and original documents.
Another well-known attraction of the city is the Amber Museum of Puerto Plata, one of the most important museums of the Amber world. Puerto Plata is also known as the “Amber Coast”.
